Creating Airport Operations Centers: Unpacking The Complexities

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) is a civil-military airport in Kentucky’s Jefferson County. At 1,500 acres with sizable global cargo and commercial travel services, it is one of the busiest and most complex airport in the world.

The airport was faced with an aging infrastructure and security technology that was approaching end-of-life. At the same time, the airport’s plans for expansion and growth were fueled by increased volume of passengers.

With an urgent need for a completely new Operations Center model, where does one begin?

Partnering with ASC, Inc., Sentinel Consulting assisted the airport in the review of new security technology and helped make sound decisions on the type of technology most appropriate for the airport’s use case and projected growth. Our team of security professionals designed and managed the upgrade of all electronic security systems throughout, and simultaneously managed the design of the new Operations Center and supporting network infrastructure.

Today, SDF is fully equipped with upgraded security infrastructure and integrated security technology that provide enhanced security, all while facilitating a superior experience for travelers and airport personnel.

Sentinel is proud to share best practices and lessons learned from this challenging and fulfilling journey.
